FOUR
of the area's leading riders combined to take third place in Saturday's national
100-kilometre team time trial championship.
Representing the Teesside District Council, local road champion Cleveland Coureur Alan Topp, Richmond and Darlington's Arthur Caygill, Stockton Wheelers Ian Murray end Cleveland Coureur Cliff Davison covered the course, which started just north of York, retracing at the Cleveland Tontine, in 2-21-40.
Although losing Davison early in the event, Topp, Caygill and Murray, who have proved in the past to be just as much at home in the big bunches or time trialling, provided the necessary three counters.
With
more than half the results on the board the Teessiders had recorded the fastest
time, but first the arrival of the eventual second placed East London team
and then the new champions, the powerful G.S. Strada~Lutz squad including
North-eastern Olympic rider Joe Waugh, national champion Phil Griffiths, Paul
Carbutt and Dave Cummings, recorded 2-11-15 to claim the medals.
Stockton Wheelers' team of Ken Wardill, Paul Curran, Andy Rawlinson and Dave Nichol finished 16th with a time of 2-33-56, while the only other local squad, Cleveland Coureurs, Barry Grieveson, Peter Bate, Derek Pearson and Stuart Edwards, were one place behind in 2-34-18.
